Association for India’s Development (AID) – Eureka Child Initiative

Association for India’s Development was founded by graduate UMD students in 1991 when founder Ravi Kuchimanchi began asking his friends to contribute $10 a month to contribute to a village in India where there was no school. The thinking behind this? “The challenge was to identify a village and a motivated teacher, make an appropriate syllabus and talk to the village children and inspire them to come to classes. Would anyone be interested?” Years later, AID has become a global organization, advocating for the betterment of India. The Eureka Child Initiative allows Iota Nu Delta to sponsor villages. For every $500 raised, 60 children are given school books, supplies, and teachers are given salaries for 1 year. This Initiative has become one of Iota Nu Delta’s signature causes.

National Marrow Donor Program (NMDP)

Donating bone marrow is typically a simple procedure that can save the lives of individuals with leukemia and other fatal blood disorders. Minorities, especially South Asians, are severely under-represented in the bone marrow donor registry. South Asian bone marrow patients have low chances of finding a donor match–1 in 20,000 as compared to 8 in 10 for Caucasians. To combat this tragic statistic, each semester Iota Nu Delta chapters around the country hold Be the Match drives to recruit potential donors and advocate for this cause.

South Asian Americans Leading Together (SAALT)

Iota Nu Delta is a longstanding partner of SAALT. Among their initiatives is the annual "Be The Change Day"--a national grassroots day of service to commemorate the life of Mahatma Gandhi. Each year thousands of people around the nation go out into their local communities to serve in unity. Iota Nu Delta brothers participate as both coordinators and volunteers, hosting large-scale events on major campuses and cities. This event is usually held on the first Saturday of October. As Mahatma Gandhi once said, “You must Be The Change you wish to see in this world."

South Asian Marrow Association of Recruiters

SAMAR is Iota Nu Delta's oldest standing national philanthropy. The goal of SAMAR (South Asian Marrow Association of Recruiters) is to educate and recruit potential marrow/blood stem cell donors in order to add racially and ethnically diverse genetic typing to the registry, thereby increasing the chances for patients of finding a marrow/blood stem cell match for transplant. They do this by working alongside the family and friends of patients in need of a transplant and conducting marrow registry drives all across the United States in order to register volunteer marrow/blood stem cell donors. Having devised and pioneered a variety of effective educational methodologies based on cultural sensitivities of diverse communities, SAMAR has the unique distinction of having successfully recruited the largest number of South Asians registrants to the Be The Match Registry® and they continue to be in the lead in improving lives of patients who need a matched marrow/blood stem cell transplant.
